I had the opportunity to work alongside Wilmer at CircleUp. Wil has a positive attitude, thoughtful approach and varied skill set that is unparalleled. He consistently demonstrated a strong knowledge of natural language processing techniques and an exceptional ability to apply them to real-world problems. Wil also has excellent communication skills and is always willing to collaborate with other members of the team. He has a talent for explaining complex technical concepts in a clear and concise manner, making him an asset in both technical and non-technical discussions. Wilmer worked with me and The Newsroom as part of an 8-week project, coordinated by Omdena. The goal of the project was to build foundational NLP models to be integrated into The Newsroom’s flagship MVP product, and it involved both high level of ambiguity and technical complexity. Wilmer acted as a Lead Machine Learning Engineer, and was central to the success of the project as a whole. Wilmer demonstrated high technical expertise, leading the development of complex ML models for claim detection; strong leadership and collaboration skills, leading key work-streams, guiding and motivating others, and structuring the work around them; as well as a keen focus on the end user and the impact of what we were building. Wilmer has a highly entrepreneurial spirit, and can jump into the details of technical development without losing sense of the big picture and end impact of the task at hand. He will be a very valuable addition to any team looking for a Senior Data Scientist, or as a founding member of a Startup.
